Take it to the computer techs to see what's wrong. The motherboard maybe cooked.

DO NOT take it to a tech. I highly doubt the motherboard is cooked. When the computer starts, initially, start pressing the delete key or the F1 key. See if a setup screen comes up. This 1/2 way verifies your motherboard is okay.

Second, do as someone else said by pressing F8 and choose safe mode. See if it boots. If that doesnt work you can choose the option called "Last known good configuration" and see if that works. Worst case scenario, reinstall Windows.

I'm leaning toward thinking the (free?) game he installed also loaded something bad onto the laptop. AVG is the best antivirus program available, and it's a free download! Google for it. It fits on a cd, and once installed automatically updates itself. Downloading free games is risky business. If you're not really computer-savvy, he might want to get assistance cleaning the laptop. (Even using the Restore Disk may not clean the Master Boot Record).

Boot the beast tapping F8 key, in boot menu select to boot to previous version that worked (or something)

If that does nopt work, there is something seriously wrong, and reinstall/repairs may be needed.

what game was it? if it was a retail game I don't think that was the cause, now if it was a pirate copy or some random thing online then it could have had some bad stuff with it that killed ya. do what the others said, and add more info.
