Even after I installed a fresh air intake it is still drawing air back out of the chimney and rejecting the exhaust from the hot water tank. I did notice after having a new b vent installed they did not install the drip plate, this can't be code? Its a direct run into the furnace and tank. Is this also my vent problem? Unlikely huh WTF is going on.

If in fact you are talking about Air Conditioner, the problem is insufficient Cold Air Return ,creating a Vacuum in the house. Add up all the outlet grills in sq in- your cold air returns must be equal. sq in. this has nothing to do with Cumbustion air used for burning.

It sounds like your central unit & the water heater are vented into a combination vent and installed in a closet. If so then the air handler is not sealed well & is sucking air from the closet. Check the cabinet & seal any openings that are allowing air to enter. If it still happens then either the heat exchanger is cracked and or you do not have enough return air going to the unit. Definitely do not continue running the water heater while this is happening because it is going to flood the home with flue gas every time it is on ehile the blower is running. Get a CO detector to be safe. They are sold at Walmart now for less than $ 20

ur units return is drawing the air back thru the chimney because u should have the plate installed....close the damper.....install fire place doors if not already..this should cut down on most of the problem

You need to tape the joints in your duct work; but first and foremost; you need to call a competent professional. Your life is at stake over this problem.

This sounds crazy and dangerous. Get an HVAC company out there to check things out before you don't wake up one morning.
