Dwarf hamsters can live from 2-4 years, the average being 2.5-3.

They usually take quite a bit of work before they warm up to humans. I personally do not prefer them, but to each her own. They do not require filtered water and can usually be just fine off of any that's okay for human consumption. I do know that many owners of small pets still prefer to use bottled or filtered water though, but that's up to you.

I use Carefresh for all of my small animals (twelve mice, two rats). It's a paper based bedding. I find it is the best at being odourless and it looks nicer, too. It's also much softer. The next best, in my opinion, would be aspen. At the pet store I work at we use carefesh for the guinea pigs and rats, and aspen for all of the others.

I always recommend mice, rats, and gerbils as pets over any type of hamster simply because they are much more active and social. If kept clean, female mice and rats don't produce any more of a smell than any other small animal. Gerbils are nice because they actually eat and drink less, which also means less waste (and less cleanup and smell!).

Good luck!

They can live to be about 4, they have a very high cancer risk, but they still live a pretty full life. You can give them regular or filtered water, whatever you think is better but filtered is not required. Any product with a lot of dust like wood shavings can cause respitory problems but if you shake the dust out that should help. if you need more help there are books.

I just checked on google about the dwarf hamsters lifespan and they said the average is 2 but they can live longer. The bedding i woudl suggest some sort of paper product. I was using cedar chips until i foudn out one of my gerbils had problems, so i just give them strips of paper to chew and maybe bedding of their own. Filtered water isnt nessesary.

Filtered water would be better than tap water. Cedar shavings can cause repiratory problems in small animals. I'd recommend Care Fresh. It's a paper product.

Why didn't you research about the pet that you plan on bringing into your home! There is alot of places you could look for answers. How will you know what to feed it? How will you know if it is sick? You should ALWAYS find out as much info. as you can BEFORE you bring home a pet! It would be selfish and irresponsible if you don't.
