The dark ages were simply a transitional period that actually may have saved civilization. The Roman Empire was being racked by disease and civil war. Every Prefect (commander of a fort) was being declared emporer and within the major cities diseases brought back from the wars with persia had wiped out many of the major cities. Had the Germanic tribes not invaded, the empire would have self-imploded and civilization probably would not have recovered. contrary to what people think the dark ages was actually a time of rebuilding not destruction. The building blocks for Charlemagne's HRE (Holy Roman Empire) were actually being laid during that time as were the building blocks for Feudalism, Global Trade and even Democracy. You have to understand that many of the places that the Germanic Tribes "invaded" had already been abandoned by the Romans as undefendable.

The broad picture of human history can be looked at merely as the rise and fall of nations. During the "dark ages", many nations had slipped to their lowest point and were next in line for a revival. Right now, countries such as the US are at the height of thier power and are destined to fall. We are on the brink of destruction, but another nation will rise to fill the void, and the cycle will begin again. Nothing much will change until Jesus returns.

The 'Dark Ages' is an inaccurate and archaic term.
Learning was not absent in the Middle Ages. In fact, the modern university can trace its roots to the medieval university. Learning was subdued, of course, because only a small percentage of society was literate. The Middle Ages saw many contributions to history, philosophy, and literature.

We would be far more advanced in our thinking and science, true.
But the main "darkness" of the dark ages came from the overpowering reach of the church in every aspect of life. We are in danger of sliping into a new dark ages today.

They didn't. It's a purely Western view of history.
Ohter parts of the world such as China were not considered when making this assertion.
