Most, if not all, the culinary herbs mentioned are natives of the Mediterranean countries, so they are used to poor soil, not much water, lots of sun and warm temps. While possible to grow them indoors, they do much better outside. I have a rosemary that's 4 ft. tall and at least that wide in the herb garden, and the gardening books tell you they aren't winter hardy in zone 7, and further north. Good thing I didn't read that before I planted the thing 12 years ago.
You might also try anything in the mint family, and that includes catnip. Most of those are about impossible to kill.

Chives, a kind of one foot long, grass/weed that is edible and grows like crazy. It tastes like an onion.
Use in salads, or admire on windowsill.
Grow them from seed, keep moist, indirect sun and you got an herb garden in three weeks!
all is well,

There's this red mold that's grows on feline feces. It's easy to grow, all you need is a cat box or a warm pillow. I've never tried it but Spot can't seem to get enough!
