How many pages is the book and is it any good? My teacher recommended it to me.

It's hilarious. Two hundred pages, but there are four others when you're done.
It's not really sci-fi-ish, but if you want something even less sci-fi-ish but just as funny and weird, try the Dirk Gently books by the same author. I think they're Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul. (Douglas Adams)

As everyone else has said, it is very funny, and it reads very quickly.
I think the point that has been missed is that the 'science fiction' aspect of the book is just a tool. This book is a satire on human behavior. how petty and selfish and myopic we can be. Especially as seen from a distance or in the faces of odd characters.
the book is witty and whimsical and makes fun of many subjects. Sometimes you need a little knowledge to fully appreciate the humor, but it's always fun even if you don't.
it is often considered cult philosophy

The main book is not too long, maybe a couple hundred pages. Its a pretty quick read and its also pretty funny -- try it, you'll like it!
There are, I think, four other books that essentially continue the story. They're not too long, either, and again, they are pretty funny.

It's absolutely hilarious! My copy of the book is 216 pages long. It's definitely funny, and it's even better if you're a sci-fi lover (or you don't mind sci-fi). Read it! :D

Excellent book. Read them all at once--it won't take long.
The movie doesn't quite do it justice.
