When the Titanic sank witnesses said the final song played by the Titanic's courageous orchestra was "Nearer, my God, to Thee", As the Titanic went down most of the passengers on board were singing the words written below...

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to thee!
Even though it be a cross, That raiseth me
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I'd be, nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to thee!

There let the way appear, steps unto heaven
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given
Angels to beckon me, nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to thee!

Then with my walking thoughts bright with Thy praise
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise
So by my woes to be, nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to thee!

Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to thee!

This very famous Welsh hymn was written by Mrs. Adams (1805 - 1845)

While popular legend has it that they band played "Nearer My God to Thee" (which I think is perpetuated in the recent movie, but not entirely sure), this eyewitness account seems to indicate the song (or perhaps, the hymn) "Autumn".

Take a look at link I'm providing below:

The folktale has always been that they were playing the hymn "Nearer My God To Thee".

But there's some eyewitness testimony to suggest that it was "Londonderry Aire", better known as "Danny Boy".

I doubt if that question will ever find a final answer.

Autumn.

Some people say it was Nearer my God to Thee but eyewitnesses, including Harold Bride, the wireless man, said he heard Autumn.
