I honestly don't think there's any single ethnic group that had it any worse than any other. We've all had bad times. The strength of the individual is judged by when they quit whinning over it.
My family didn't want to come here (Irish) but the English had other plans for my family's land and we were loaded like cattle on boats and shipped to America. They didn't want the Irish either and if you look up St George's Island, you'll find where there are mass graves of Irish immigrants that weren't allow access to this country.
BFD, right?
That's what I say. All of our ancestors put up with a "world of hurt" for us to be here.... just be glad they were strong enough to endure.

Institutionalized racism still exists, and opression of the poor and the people of color is still an issue. True, it started with slavery, and yeah thats not really the point here in todays modern world. But there are still ghetos, and children growing up in poverty. There is still racism and segregation in our public school systems. While it is no longer applicable to blame all whites for all problems in the african american community, it is even more unnaceptable that whites whine about some the issues left to deal with. I dont know if the answer is reparations, or maybe just a fair shot in school and the job market, or what. I think these answers can be more adequately addressed when a more diverse and representative group of leaders come together. IE: less rich white conservatives and more leaders of color.

I don't believe in reparations in those cases because it's been too long to differentiate those directly harmed by the nation's actions vs. those who are not (Native Americans, that's a little easier to prove). Anyway, I do blieve in reparations in the short term. Germany repaying surivors of the Holocaust for stolen property, is an example.
But, I wanted to point out that we DO pay for slavery dearly today. Slavery can only exist when one denies the humanity of a grou p of people. Simply freeing said slaves does not prevent their former masters from denying them their humanity. Thus, after the Reconstruction, laws were passed that pushed former slaves right back into similar conditions - endentured servitude. Let's face facts, it wasn't until 1965 that the government finally passed laws fully granting equal rights to all citizens - overturning segregation.
No, our generation is not responsible for the actions of our ancestors - however, it is our responsibility to try to correct the legacies the sins of our fathers left behind.

Get a job and work your butt off like everyone else. Half the blacks in this country were never slaves and there were also black slave owners.
