Its an index of 500 companies representing different sectors within the US economy. It's purpose is to provide a general idea of the trend of stock (corporate) valuations of the US stock matket and general economic health. The consituents of the index are changed periodically to reflect relevant business of the era. Check the website for the current constituents and more information. Also note that Standard and Poors is a very large financial information company that does a lot of work in rating credit worthiness of companies with outstanding bonds.
