During the late summer and fall of 1888 a serial killer called Jack the Ripper stalked the east end of London, in the Whitechapel section to be specific, and murderd five women, all prostitutes. Since that time some have tried to attribute other killings to The Ripper but those five are all that were thought at the time to be his work. Examination of the other alledged murders shows a very differnt, "style" I suppose is the best term or motis opernandi if you are a fan of CSI, so I have always suspected that the five prostitutes were his only victims. The killings kept becoming more horrific as the degree of mutilations increased almost as if he were building up to a climax. The last victim was a woman named Mary Kelly. Her body was mutilated to a very great degree, look it up if you wish I have no desire to cataloge the attrocity. After Kelly's death the murders stopped suddenly and the case was never officially cleared. Over the years the suspects have become legion in number but for my part Montague J. Druitt has always seemed to be the most likely. The reasons for this are several, he had offices very near to Whitchapel. Although he was a barrister, lawyer, he had attended medical school and was expereinced in disection. His family also had a streak of insanity running through it as wide as the Mississippi and even his own brother suspected him of the killings and Montague himself wrote to his family and revealed that he thought he was going mad. Finally, and most telling, Druitt died and the murders ceased. All circumstantial but the authorities at the time suspected that Druitt was their man and all of the evidence against him might not have seen the light of day. Druitt either died by his own hand, his body was found floating in the Thames, or he was done away with. Regardless, the man died and the murderes stopped. The problem, and the reason that Druitt isn't mentioned in many recent books and movies is that he isn't a very exciting suspect. It is far more fun, and likely to sell books, to name a member of the royal family or their physician or a famous painter even though there isn't any serious evidence. So in a nut shell, five women victims, all prostitutes, no men were killed, the Ripper was never caught but his identity was very probably Montague Druitt.

No one really knows how many he killed because no one knows who he is and he never came forward to admit his crimes. There are 7 murders thought to be committed by Jack the Ripper, but these are just the messy murders consistent with with his profile. Serial killers rarely stop killing until they are caught, so it is virtually certain that since Jack was never caught he went on killing in a more low profile manner. I think upwards of 100 murders is a reasonable estimate.

He used a knife to slash open the stomachs of prostitutes working the streets of London, unfortunately this was quite a fashionable thing to do at that time, there were quite a few copycats so no one really knew exactly how many he killed

Jack the Ripper is something interesting. It is true that he only killed women. He rape and abuse women. Most of them are prostitute and nurse in his hospital. He is actually a doctor. His crime was finally paid when a doctor discover his crime by following him.

I think it was six, with one dispute, because their was two murders within minutes of each other, before the police arrived, making it five or maybe six, and that night If ,I'm right was the end of his rampage. or at least the last that was heard of him.
