I reccommend getting a copy of the Consumer Reports Auto issue. It has a 7-year reliability history of just about every make and model.
In short, you can't get more reliable than a Toyota/Lexus/Scion or Honda/Acura.

That's a good question. It depends what you want to use the vehicle for. Just remember, the more options the car has, the more that can go wrong. Everything gives out eventually, so get something that will last a long while. I bought a 1993 Chevy pickup, and have put less than $1500 into it in the past 13 years. It still looks and runs like brand new. There aren't too many other vehicles that can do that! Not to mention, a pickup is useful for just about anything!

Any Honda or Toyota.
I love Fords....but they are not even close to matching reliability.
