Good question!

And the answer is 7. Yep, there are only 7 known people on the planet with that last name and two of them spell it wrong.

Ironically though, there are more than 850 trillion people with the last name of Phlambankenstergeon and they all have freckles.Isn't that weird?

I can't say how many in the world today. But some statistics to give an idea:

1930 US Federal Census has 70,088
1901 UK census (excluding Scotland) has 11,557
1911 Canadian Census has 1,271
1993-2002 US Phone Directory Listings has 151,530. There is some duplication for people who changed phone numbers or have multiple numbers, but for someone with one phone for the entire period, they are counted only once. It does not count the number of family members per phone.
1984-Present US Public Records Index 282,669 There are duplications depending on the source of the records. People could also be deceased. Again, this index does not take into account family members.

I dodn't know the number, but you have the Irish people and the Jewish people both using that as a surname (different pronounciation, though), so I'd imagine a lot of people.
