Sure it is perfectly legal. And it is legal for students to refuse. Just like cashing a check. I will get your fingerprint on the back or you can take your check somewhere else.

In Spain the law requires that citizens carry an ID card called the Documento Nacional de Identidad. One is to produce it when asked to, particularly when paying with a credit card. It carries the peson's full name, signature, address and date of birth and is specially plastified.

Foreigners legally residing in Spain carry a similar card, but it also carries a fingerprint of the person that is kept on record.

They're actually really handy for resolving ID issues at a glance. Downside is that they're a beaurocratic pain to get hold of.

The only time someone (a law offical) can fingerprint you, is if you are accused of a crime. You should call your lawer. Fingerprinting like this, how you described, is an infringment of your childs rights, even if done by the school or a police officer. I would call a lawyer ASAP.

If you go to a public school it is legal because public schools are organizations of the state, they are using it for security which you should be happy about. If your kids or any other kids go to school and act stupid and destroy property they will be able to pinpoint who has done it and they won't punish the group as a whole. It will also protect against outside visitors from posing as students and causing your children harm.

The state made that choice if it is a public school and they have a justified reason. It is no different than drug testing on children by taking hair samples, which is legal.

You can refuse to be fingerprinted, and they have to allow you, however is it really that big a deal?

I think that's unconstitutional...that's really stretching it as far as Fourth Amendment rights go.
