i heard he overdosed, but my kids were watching an episode today showing him hand over the show to the other guy, joe.
this leads me to believe the o-d story was total bullshit.

He left to join a band called The Flaming Lips. Check out his website, He looks much better with beard and moustache.

I don't know when he left, but the guy who played Steve basically quit the show because he felt that he would be forever typecasted as Steve from Blues Clues. He wanted other acting jobs.

He wanted to leave, he didn't want to be typecast, so he left after his contract was up. Around the time he was still on Blues Clues he did a Law and Order episode, but other than that I don't think he has done much else.

from what i herd and believe, he was just tired of being a childrens tv show star, every actor has to try to expand so they said on the show that he went to college [= which was cute. and this was almost a year ago already. . .my family babysits a 3 yr old 5 days a week and im now a sr. in highschool looking at colleges and i was disussing it with my mom and the baby turns around and goes ' shannon's going to college with steve? i also heard it was because of drugs. i think the show you are talking about he had to do so the kids would understand that steve wasn't there anymore.
