You REALLY need to get everything set up before, to make sure you have everything you need, but also to make sure the temps stabalize to the proper gradient with whatever heat source you're using. Also, it's a lot less stressful on the animal to be dumped into the perfect habitat right away after the big move instead of being stuck in a box or improper environment for a while.

Just a side note, if your gecko is a small baby you should ask about other substrate options besides sand- the smaller the gecko, the worse the consequences if they swallow any! I kept my baby on moss until he was older, and lots of people use reptile carpet, newspaper, or paper towels. If you just have to have him on sand, buy a small plastic cage to feed him in so he doesn't eat any sand. Even too much of the 'edible' calci-sand or bone-aid types can hurt a baby!

I think that its best if you let the geckos settle in, at least that's what we did into their new habitat, then go after 4 or 5 days........then they'll be looking for food. Good luck! They are pretty low maintenance and lots of fun to hang out with and have around!!! :)

you could do that but it's probably better to go buy the stuff get it set up then go get the gecko so when you bring him home you have everything already set up for him, put him in his cage and let him adjust for a day or two b4 handling him.

you need to purchase the food and habitat and stuff before. don't forget to get a heat lamp and calcium stuff too. you should read up on the subject before you get the animal.
