I have faced this situation and I sat the guy down and told him that I have a crush on him and asked him how he felt about me... He didn't have a romantic interest in me but was flattered that I felt that way about him.... we spent the whole night talking about it and by the end of the night I had talked myself out of the crush, well darn near, anyway.
We agreed to remain freinds and we did... I still feel a little weak at the knees around him but that is not a bad thing...
he was very gentlemanly about the whole thing and remembered not to flirt with me for fun... unless he had changed his mind of course...

A lot of people usually fall for their guy or girl friends because they feel comfortable around them!! I can't really say what will happen when you tell him, but my guess is if you really like him and you guys are true friends then he might not mind!! I know you shouldn't do this but ask a friend to help you!! Have your friend ask him if he likes you at all!! If he does then ask him out!! Say your really sweet and nice and I really like your personality and I know were friends but I wanna be more than friends and I understand if you don't wanna be but I'm just asking!! I really like you a lot and I was wondering if we can maybe go out!! Now if he doesn't like you then don't ask him out because from personal experience afterwards it's to weird to hang out with each other!! I don't know what you should do it's just some examples!! All I know is to follow what your heart says it won't let you down and it'll lead you to the right path!!!!

Just find a way to talk to him first, offer to go on a walk or something, then be like there is something I want to tell you but I feel kinda weird saying it, let him know how you feel about the whole thing then just say something like this, I know we have been friends for about a year and I still wanna be your friend but I am starting to like you in a more boyfriend/girlfriend type of a way and I was wondering what you thought. Something like that or if you dont wanna like tell him to his face write him a note or something.

Ok well me and my sister think that you should make a special night for the two of you and then tell him. Then if he doesnt feel the same thats ok just say you still want to be just friends and try to get over him then. Cuz maybe hes right, it might not end well if you two go out.

Maybe make a picnic and go into some woods with him. Then when you are alone and the mood is right , tell him. Bring condoms if you think you might need them.

I'd work casually into it. First, date him just for fun, and see if he enjoys it. After doing this twice, if he seemed like he had fun, then confess.

Just a suggestion, though. I've never tried it myself. But then, I being a guy, therefore you might have more success than I might hope to.

* * * Most likely, he has a crush on you too, but is just as nervous. One day, just say, "I have something really important to tell you, but I don't want to lose our friendship, because I enjoy it so much." Wait to see what his response is and go from there....once he's like, "just tell me what it is" say, well...."We've been friends for so long and you are an awesome person....I really like being with you and I'm starting to like you more than just a friend....BUT I don't want it to ruin our friendship and even if you don't like me back, I just wanted to tell you"

I'm sure he won't be mad about it...he'll probably be flattered as long as you don't let it affect your friendship.

well don't surprise him with it, don't just jump up and say you like him, do it slowly, act like its awkward for you to say, so he knows you've been thinking about it for a while.

when i told by best friend i liked her, it didn't go so well. i said it out of the blue and that made things awkward for a while. we got over it but it took a lot of im sorry and explanation emails and phone calls for us to act normal again, which was flirting with each other. figure that out.

that is a tough one. i have passed through the same problem. just tell him,it is better to get it over with. u never know, he may like u too. and if u don't tell him and he does like you, maybe you will never be together like you wish.
hope this helps!
