I would listen to the first answer. Get both, but avoid horizontal stripes if you are big. Also, vertical stripes are a no no if you are really tall and skinny.

Go with solid polos. It's classier and with the right style and color you can mix and match them with dress pants or nice jeans. Some solid polos also have a little hint of screen art placed on the left shoulder or back. That would give a good sense of edgier style. Triple 5 Soul have some nice collections. Check out Salvage, Affliction as well. They have some nice screen designs on polos.

both stripes are so in but you want solid to just incase they leave style

Either. But, if you are heavy, never wear stripes. They make you look even heavier.

Get stripes only if they are vertical. (If you're a beanpole, doesn't matter.)
Solids are good anytime, red & white do make you look larger though.

Buy a mixture of both. So you switch up your style.
