The other common name for a corn snake is the red rat snake. Does that help?

Rat Snake is very encompassing. There are black rat snakes, yellow rat snakes, grey rat snakes, leucistic rat snakes, great plains rat snakes, Emory's rat snakes, and at least a dozen others. The individual species have 3-5 scientific parts per name each. The corn snake WAS Elaphe gutatta gutatta, but has been changed within the last year to Pantherophis gutatta. Black Rat snakes are Elaphe gutatta gutatta obsoleta obsoleta. They were considered subspecies, but now are considered different species; However, There are still times when people do make subspecies by breeding them together. They aren't the same species though. Maybe same subspecies, but not same species.

The D-bag above me makes it too complicated. The two snakes are closely related, and do look a lot alike, but are not the same. Corn snakes tend to vary in color a good bit more, these are called "morphs", which tend to make the prices go up. Basically the same snake, Corns just look better.

Rat snakes encompass the genus Elaphe, whereas corn snakes are a species of that genus.

In other words, corn snakes are in the same group as rat snakes but so are a lot of other types of snakes.

All corn snakes are rat snakes but not all rat snakes are corn snakes. (kinda like all hospitals are buildings but not all buildings are hospitals ;-) )
