Install a firewall (Zone Alarm Pro) or Configure your IPSec firewall and enable your Windows XP inbuilt firewall. Disable the services that are not required and install an antivirus software like Norton. With all this if you want to keep yourself away from spywares, malwares and browser hijackers, create a RAMdrive and divert Temp files, Temporary Internet Files, History and Cookies to your newly created RAMdrive. The last thing you do is go to this site and scan your PC for open ports:-

The techs at www.yto.ca advised that I use the free antivirus program avg. it works awesome. found at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5, i believe they also offer a firewall. Zone Alarm has a free firewall that works well too, (don't double up on security only one antivirus and one firewall or your computer will not work properly) The best firewall is a hard ware firewall an example of this is a router. For spyware you can use more than one: spybot search and destroy and adaware both work great for finding and removing spyware from your computer. and both are free as well.

For a firewall I still think for a Windows PC, Zone Alarm from Zone Labs is the best. They have a free version.

McAfee IS one of the best firewal/antivirus however there are better ones that dont slow down your system and your resorces as much. If you are going to buy one, your best overall security is Trend Micro Pc-Cillin Internet Security. It has everything you need and free phone support ( a rarity in the business). If you dont believe me go to the following link and see what cNet and its editors have to say.

Good luck. It is a hard choice.

hi, Norton firewall is not a bad choice. but you need to pay for the software.

i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

download firefox for free:

ok this is the best you can get for free trust me-
sunbelt kerio firewall-rated best free firewall
avg free-rated best free antivirus
spyware blaster-rated one of the best spyware proction by CNET
spyware S&D-rated one of the best spyware proction by CNET
adaware SE-rated one of the best spyware proction by CNET
CCleaner-cleans you computer of crap

zone alarm is OK but its not as good compared to kerio,
(actually the best firewalls are hardware firewall like a router)
Nortan and mcafee are allright but you have to pay for the good service,
if you pay for antivirus go with trend micro

and there is nothing else you should use except spybot S&D, spyware blaster and adaware SE-if you want pay for the upgrade s they are good.
