We recycle computers to the children who need them for homework, but who might never otherwise get one. The clubs and Linux Users Groups recycle, to Downs Syndrome Society group homes, to private schools, to churches...
We wipe the drive securely, and then, put linux on them, and they now run 8 times to 50 times faster!
You see, it is illegal to donate Microsoft or other proprietary software, just ask the Salvation Army, who were sued and fined millions in 2003. You LEASE all that software, you do not 'own' it!
Therefore you sign an agreement (EULA) to only run on one computer, never sell, donate, copy, or share, any of it!
Microsoft.com, MSN.com, and Hotmail.com all run on 30,000+ Linux computers, for security and stability!
If the computer is slower than 800Mhz, it does a great job as a hardware firewall, router, wifi secure point, and web page content filter for up to 30 client computers in a school.
We use IPCOP for that, and Dan's Guardian for the web page content filter, Spam Assassin to kill all spam, and AVG to stop virus before they hit the home, church, or school, networks! It will serve to any computer, just as Google.com does with their 100,000 Linux computers!
You can do all of this, for yourself, on your home network! In less than 40 minutes to an hour! 700 Linux User Groups are here to help, & in towns across the world, with free Installfests! http://lugww.counter.li.org and, check out the 70 Yahoo Linux forums!

This is what I would do with a 5 year old PC. Take out the hard disk drive install it in the new computer take out the motherboard and and donate it to a computer shop. Take the power supply and put that aside in a closet for a spare one. Trash the case and sell the RAM on E-Bay for like $10.00 junk the CRT keep the key board. Oh yeah the main computer is NOT called a CPU.

If you have a pretty up-to-date Windows and it is capable of going online, why not contact your local church to see if a parishioner might be in need. One caution though, if any personal information, SS number, credit card number, etc. were on it, I would destroy the hard drive before giving it away.

keep IT -
you can do a number of things with it - (it it still works)
if it doesn't work take all the component out of it - you can use these for spare just incase your new computer goes wrong !!!
Or the best option (it it still works) use your old computer as a networked firewall - it works great - and give you excellant protection
do not throw it a way - utilise it
