FYI... BACKGROUND CHECK most certainly does NOT take 7-10 days. The "Instant" check thru NCIC takes a few minutes. State-mandated waiting periods, however, vary. In my home state of Washington my carry permit allows to to cash-and-carry any firearm I may legally own, but I still have to go thru the NCIC check.

Pick out your weapon. Show your ID. The store will have you fill out a form. They will then make a phone call and enter the info that you gave them. Then wait for the OK. It usually takes 10 minutes for me to be cleared. Some people it takes days.

It depends on your state... you can go to the site and look up the laws in your state, that will tell you the step-by-step process for purchasing one.

After purchasing the gun, there is a period of time you have to wait for them to verify information before you actually get the gun. It used to be days, but I think they have shortened it down. I really don't pay attention because I get my guns immediately. If you have a concealed gun license, there is no wait.

first and big thing is the criminal background check. usually about 7-10 days in duration. if anything even remotely criminal pops up, no gun. after that, really it's just a matter of paying for it. i believe the gun shop will help or do the registering of the gun for you
