Your best bet is private grants.

You may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Check if they have any for the kind of purpose that you want

stay home...if someone wanted you there they would contact you.
I am sure if you look you will realize that there are many experienced people doing what you want to do. Work where you live and build up your reputation, gain experience.
