Don't waste your time trying to repair it. Replacement lights are inexpensive. You can change it yourself. You can do anything you want on your own home. Ceiling lights have two screws connecting them to the electrical box. Then three wires. (normally) White is positive. Black is neutral. Bare Copper is ground. Turn the power off and do it yourself. Good luck.

Sounds like you need a new one. By law now, you'll need the work to be done by a qualified electrician. If you're reasonably competent, you can get a replacement pull cord switch from Homebase and do the job yourself, but I did'nt tell you that.

Sounds like it just wore out. Either get a new switch, a new light or both. They make some really nice ones these days that are great so check them out and decide which you would rather do.

Up in that Porcelan fixture there is a broken spring or catch- a new one is cheap and its easy to replace- one day it will quit working all together, so when the budget and time is right replace it.

Actually by law you only need to get the work done by a NEIC electrician where it is a completely new installation, refurbishing of an existing installation can be done by DIYers

Yes it sounds like it is getting mystical, but I think you really knew this deep down. Make no mistakes with this, renew the nuisance.
