Technically, the term "free gift" is a redundency, because as you correctly note all gifts are free. If it is not free, it is not a gift. A gift is something given without charge. The term "free gift" was coined by businesses who wanted people to believe that they were really getting something for nothing, because many people did not realize that by definition the gift they were getting was already free. Thinking that they were getting something for nothing made it more attractive. The term has become so common that it is now accepted usage.

As we all know, they aren't 'free', and it's just another oxymoron, as in 'Giant shrimp', Military Intelligence' etc.
But a gift, is by nature free, not when it has conditions on it, like buy this computer and get a free printer.

Most gifts are free apart, ironically, from the gifts offered by commercial companies that are refered to as 'free' These are not free because the companies that offer them wants something from you. ie your custom.

Except the ones that require penicillin or a shot of antibiotics to stop the burning. Those require maintenance gifts, and they cost.
