I found whan my kids were able to walk and climb was the best time to put them in a toddler bed. Beter to have a bed with side guards than fall out of a crib they climbed out of.

usually around age two, but my oldest had to go into a toddler bed at 10 months because he climbed out of his crib. My middle son went into a toddler bed around 15 months because he climbed out! I guess it varies. I have a niece who is two and a half and is happy sleeping in her crib and has never tried to climb out.

When he is climbing out of the crib so often that the crib is no longer useful, and, at the same time, he is growing so that he fills up most of the crib. :)
