I bought it brand new and I don't remember where I put the title. I don't live in the same state anymore either. Do I have to call the DMV where I bought it?

You can probably find out how to get a replacement title online from the state in which you bought the car. You pay a fee and then they send you a replacement. Just make sure you have a copy of your vin number and license number for proof of identity,

All you have to do is go to the DMV and apply for a lost title. It shouldn't matter where you bought the car...but you do have to know what state the original title is from.

You can go to the DMV, they will be a ***** to deal with though...they may even give you a frickin salvage title...that will be taken as if the car was stolen, even though you owned it the whole time...it's a good idea to leave it in the glove box. That way, you can get onto military base...crap is, it will still be a great car for you, but if you don't find the title...it will be a ***** to trade in or sell when it's car buying time.

You can file at any BMV (bureau of moter vehicles). I did it for a lost title on a boat I purchased almost a year ago. If you have some sort of document that says it is yours (receipt, bill of sale, ect.) You can write a letter and file for a new title. The BMV anywhere can give you the address in your area to mail the document and letter to. This worked for me for a watercraft, so I imagine it would be somewhat the same for a car.

Yes, you must contact the DMV of the state where the purchase was recorded. Hopefully you can do this online. They may request license playe number as well as the VIN number.

You will have to go back to the state where you purchased the car. No other state's DMV will get it for you. Sucks, I know, but thats how it is.

did you not trasfer your title when you moved ?

Also shall I assume you have it paid for, since you won't have the title on a car you owe money on.

But you contact the DMV ( place you get your licence plates) and fill in the paperwork for a replacement. You will need ID.

Contact the Dept of Motor Vehicles.. Give them your name, license number, plate number, bank which held the lien and they will for a fee give you a replacement title. I had to do that for one of my older cars when the title got lost in a move.
