The energy from the sun is transported in the form of light. Since black-colored objects do not reflect any wavelength of light (that's why they are black), they absorb it, thus absorbing the energy.
On the contrary, white-colored objects reflect most of the visible light (that's why they are white) -- therefore they don't absorb as much energy (they still do, a little bit, from the infrared light, but not nearly as much).

Black paper fails to reflect all parts of the spectrum, including infrared. We perceive it as black due to the lack of reflection. Therefore, black paper absorbs all parts of the spectrum, including infrared, which is the light frequency that imparts heat. The absorbed infrared heats the water.

Black absorbs light energy converting it to heat, whereas white reflects the light and doesn't warm up. This is also why dark colored cars heat up more quickly than light colored cars. Dark clothing vs. light clothing, etc. etc.
My roommate is trying to convince me that this is why white people are cooler than black people, but I'm not buying it.

White paper reflects heat, black absorbs it.
This is true of any white or black surface.
