Donate them to a nursing home, local ARC (Association of Retarded Citizens) a battered women's shelter or a community organization like the YMCA. All of those organizations have people who need entertainment... and if the CD's and DVD's aren't their "cup of tea" (like if they were all speed-metal CD's or horror flicks) then they could just sell or chuck them.

I am sure you could think of some clever artwork. Actually I think I saw someone make like a mosaic tabletop out of broken CDs. Beautful.
And you can destroy and create all in the same project!

get a cathadode light that will fit thru the center of a cd, stack all the cds and make a base and lid. put hte light in the center
makes a cool light.

A lot of places will buy used CD/DVDs. Failing that, use them as coasters.

Stop by your local hobby shop and pick up battery operated clock works and make clock faces with the cd's. Then head for your local flea market and make a killing.

there should be like cd stores around that will buy used cd and dvds, then you can buy brand new ones so that, your collection is always changing

Display them on one of my wall in a nice way. Or just buy CDs stand and put it next to my desk.

make some sort of column out of them and arrange a crystal at the top to point at star wars action figures on the equinoxes
