Until both mother and baby are ready to stop. Ideally, the two are ready at the same time. The World Health Organization recommends nursing for *at least* 2 years.

At least till 6 months, when the baby will have received most of the benefits of breast feeding. After that it is up to you, some people do it way after two but most stop around 18 months. After 1 they aren't getting much nutrition and it can be just a need on the part of the mother to keep the very close relationship going. On the other hand if you have to go back to work remember even a couple of weeks will give your child a head start.

Wow. Some of you people have some pretty strange ideas about breastfeeding. No wonder it has a bad name and we get funny looks when we do it or talk about it. Its because of you weirdos who think its something sexual and wrong when its actually the most natural thing in the world.
The British government recommend exclusive breastfeeding until at least 6 months old but the World Health Org recommend continuing with feeding for AT LEAST 2 YEARS.
I'VE HEARD THE WORLD WIDE AVERAGE AGE FOR WEANING OFF THE BREAST IS 4 YEARS OLD.
Anyone who thinks its sick or perverted obviously has issues and shouldn't put their strange ideas out there to put off other mums from doing whats best for their baby.
My advice on when to stop would be this; do it when your baby and you are ready and not before. Don't let others influence you either way. If you are both ready then stop, if you are not then don't.
BTW I am still feeding my 13 1/2 month old daughter and don't plan on stopping yet. And no I DO NOT "GET OFF ON IT" and I am NOT "ABUSING" HER. All I get from it is the comfort of being cuddled up with her and it can actually be quite painful now she has so many teeth. But she will tell me when it's time to stop.

I believe the official recommendation is 2 years old. I've been reading up on this lately...thinking about having a kid...and so far just about everywhere I've come across says 2. However, the longer can do it the more benefits the baby get out of it, i.e. 6 months is better than 2 months.

As long as possible - even 2 days is better than none.
Should only be as long as both mother and child find comfortable.
Breast feeding older children can be difficult but I have seen some breastfeed right through early childhood.
One thing to consider is the alternative as cows milk is not as beneficial as mothers milk at any age.

I'll vote 2 1/2.
My first was breastfed til 22 months and that went well.
My second I weaned at 44 months (LOL) and she STILL complains about it. (She's 7 1/2) I think there's something wrong there, so I say split the difference.

I would have to say until you feel comfortable weaning.
The Eskimo women would breastfeed a child until they were like 5 or so years old. One of the reasons was because they didn't have the food to feed small children, so breastfeeding was the only way for the child to get the nutrients it needed to survive.
