It seems like firemen have more moustaches than the average population. Nicholas Cage grew a moustache for his upcoming 9-11 movie where he plays a fireman (and he looks rediculous in it in my opinion.) Even fireman toys!

So lets hear from the firemen out there. Whats with the moustaches?

p.s. im not saying they look bad or anything. im just curious

During the 19th century, moustaches were associated with active, military types.

The fireman's moustache is a holdover from those days.

OMFG!!! I totally had a theory about this! OK I love the movie Ladder 49, and Robert Patrick had a mustache. And then I noticed that every fireman (even toys) of about 45 yrs or older has a mustache! So I asked one of them who is a friend, if when you hit 40... are you required to grow a mustache? I told him my theory... he thought awhile and then said "oh my God you're right!!!! We do all have mustaches!!!" Apparently he was as freaked out as me! lol

Probably an occupational thing. But i dare say that mustache helps to weave air better into the nose and firemen do need to smell stuff.

For fire safety of course.
If the moustache starts to sizzle and smoking, it's time to get out of there.

The tradition started long ago when protective gear was not as good as it is today. The walrus mustache could be soaked and it would add protection by keeping their face cooler.

I think because they want to look virile and young and strong they grow on so the furrows in their lips do not show.

Many fire men have to shave all their facial hair so that the oxygen tank mask fits snuggly.
