That's a hard one.
I'd say cheat. Use Cliff Notes. But that doesn't get you anywhere so compromise instead. Read as much of the book as you can in one sitting and convince yourself that there is SOMETHING in it that you would find interesting. Go through it with a highlighter and see if there are sentences that you particularly like. If you plan on becoming a writer yourself, this is easier to to. But basically, read the book--make a game out of reading it. Try to predict what will happen in the next 10 or 20 pages then READ those 10 - 20 pages to see if you were right. Keep a tally of the number of times you were right or wrong and if you have a high score of right answers, then go out and do something MORE fun than normal on the weekend.

Set a time and place to read. Go to your room and tell yourself you will read 2 pages before dinner, then another 2 after. Do it in baby steps, you may be surprised that at some point it will grab you. Once your done, it will be such an amazing feeling when in class the teacher mentions something from the book and you find yourself nodding in agreement. The feeling will become addictive. Nothing better than knowing what's going on.

Just read the reviews online, most of them tell you the entire story. But I've rather you choose to read a chapter each or all at once. Forget that you hate it, I recall reading books so I irked and just read it. Kind of like when you close your nose while eating something smelly... Good Luck though, been there, done that.

You only have to read it if you think you do.
When, oh when, are you going to start choosing to live your own life, rather than how others want you to live?
When you're out of school? When you reach 35? Never? Right this instant???
Maybe your teacher needs to be taught something here. Probably he/she is just perpetuating the lie they were raised to believe.
I trust in you and your inner wisdom.
Don't be a follower. Don't be a leader. Be the only thing you know how to be. - You

What don't you like about it? Is it boring, does it deal with subjects that make you uncomfortable, is it hard to identify with the characters, is it in a foreign language and you have to translate it?
There are different strategies for each of these.

Read a chapter and then reward yourself. Read a chapter, then reward yourself. What's the name of the book?

You know what you can do? Get a tape recording if it and listen to it rather than read it yourself. Sometimes it sounds better on tape.
