If you're an employer the Social Security Administration has a Verification Service available for free.
You can verify up to 10 employees per screen or you can upload and verify a larger batch of employes (up to 250,000).
You have to register first, but still free.
If you're not an employer, SSA also allows for "Consent-Based SSN Verification". Which you need to get consent from your client to verify the number and pay a small fee to SSA.

No.

There are certain websites where you can order a background check on a social security number, but you have to go through a telephone interview, and it costs money.

If you have reason to believe that they would supply you with a fake SSN, then you should ask yourself why you are doing business with such a person. Has something like this happened to you in the past?

Does this client have a criminal history to hide? Consider ordering a police report on him. Hope this answer helps.

You can run a credit check. You will need their authorization, and you will have to pay for it (about $75).
