Ford is barely alive now and as GM continues to post 3+ million dollar loses every quarter, how long before Toyota takes over the #1 spot as the worlds biggest auto maker.

Clarification: Toyota already is number one in Car Sales worldwide. I think they are number one is Car Sales in the USA also, but Light Truck sales keep GM and Ford numbers up.

They are expected to become the Number 1 vehicle manufacturer in the world in 2010, but maybe sooner. Now they are Number 2 vehicle manufacturer in the world.

However, recently Toyota has had quality problems. Yes, they still build great cars for a great value, but their advantage is slipping because it is a competitive industry, and other manufacturers are getting better, and are less expensive.

GM has made phenomenal growth in China, but it's less than half a million cars. The cost of this, is that SAIS has developed another company, Chery, that they will import to the USA as a low priced offering, that will directly take market share from the less expensive offerings from GM and Ford and others.

FURTHER CLARIFICATION:

For the month of July 2006, Toyota did sell more total vehicles in the USA than Ford did. Honda sold more vehicles than Daimler Chrysler. That is just a one month sales statistic.

I HATE Toyota, i'm an American & I think GM builds Awesom cars & is turning in the right direction. What they did with the small blocks in the Impalas & monte carlos is a great idea, however, I feel they should bring back the park avenue (3800 supercharged or not) becuz they get gas milege in the upper 30's.I really hope GM keeps the top spot becuz they are also reliable & in-exspensive

Ummmm, my numbers tell me GM is #1, Ford is #2, Chrysler is #3, and Totoya is #4. GM's turnaround is going ahead of schedule.

Will toyota knock off Chrysler this year? Maybe. Ford? Maybe. GM? Not this year. They are going for the jugular right now, and it might just backfire on them. Keep watching.

I believe in buying American. But I also believe in buying the best product available for the money. If Ford lost ground it is because they produced cars that were clearly inferior to the Japanese models of the same cost.

Not long, if the US automakers continue to crowd their product lines with gas-guzzling trucks and blame their employees' pensions for their problems while the CEOs continue to loot the companies and count on the governemnt to bail them out....
