There is a checkpoint along I-15 coming in to California.

It's the other way around. The check point is for those leaving Nevada entering California. If you take the exit just prior to that you can avoid it by driving through town and re-entering beyond the check point.

Yes there are usually checkpoints on the roads coming into california, but not leaving. The reason is, that they don't want you to bring any kind of fruit, vegitables, or plants etc into california.
This is mostly to keep from introduceing fruit flies into the state.

AS A MATTER OF FACT YES, IN APRIL AND MAY THERE WAS A BIG IMMIGRATION RAID WHERE THE 40 AND THE 15 MEET. EVERYONE WHO LOOKED HISPANIC WAS TAKING IN FOR QUESTIONING AND THEY ASKED FOR THEIR PAPERS. ALSO IF YOU ARE GOING TO VEGAS THERE IS A CHECKPOINT THAT THE I. N. S AND BORDER PATROL HAVE ARRANGED FOR THAT SAME PURPOSE. GOOD LUCK.
