Do NOT launder real down. A comforter is so large that it is very difficult to dry. This leads to mildew.

Periodically air out your down comforter outside on a couple of clotheslines. You lay it over a couple of lines to maximize exposed surface area. Sunshine kills mites. Fresh air and sunshine freshens its smell. Dry clean at least once a year if you do not use a duvet.

Invest in at least one duvet. A duvet is basically a pillowcase for your comforter. That way, you will only need to launder the duvet --- you won't need to clean the comforter. This can drastically reduce the number of times you dry clean your comforter. If you have more than one duvet, you can always have a clean one on your comforter without having to wait for a wash and dry cycle to run.

Once a year I take all our comforters to the laundromat and use their Large Capacity - no agitators - washers. With drying, it takes about 2 hrs to do 8 comforters.

Don't put anything larger than a twin-size in your washer. It will throw the balance off. To wash the items yourself at a laundromat, cost less than $5 per comforter.

Generally speaking, a professional dry cleaner is your best bet. Down does not launder well. feathers and water don't mix.

follow the instructions on the care tag for cleaning purposes . . I would recommend dry cleaning it because if your don't properly dry the comforter, the feathers will smell from being clumped together . . . if you are going to wash it, put tennis balls in the dryer with it to help fluff up the feathers
