Smells Like Teen Spirit changed the face of rock music as we knew it up until the early 90s. The alternative music scene from Seattle spawned bands with a totally new sound full of angst and alternative rock survives today..... Much longer than the hair metal bands of the 80s (although I am a huge fan)! Nirvana was a popular American rock band from Aberdeen, Washington. With the lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their 1991 album Nevermind, Nirvana exploded into the mainstream, bringing along with it an offshoot of punk and alternative rock that the mainstream media of the time referred to as grunge. Other Seattle grunge bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden also gained in popularity, and, as a result, alternative rock became a dominant genre on radio and music television in the United States during the early-to-middle 1990s.

I've gotta give it to G&R--that song is what rock is!

The White Stripes are the best rock that's been around lately, but they still don't have Welcome to the Jungle beat. I don't think I'd like Teen Spirit as much if it wasn't what I listened to back in the day-- I think I like it because of it's place in the soundtrack of my life, rather than its actual merit as a rock song.
