It was Happy Days and the reason he hung out with Richie and his friends was that Milwaukee wasn't really big enough to accommodate all of Fonzie's cool, let alone someone cool enough to be on Fonzie's level. So having a lack of cool peers Fonzarelli had to settle for Richie Cunningham.
Besides by being friends with Richie he got invited over to dinner at the Cunninghams' constantly.

First off it was Happy Days, Good Times had J. J. "Dy-no-mite" Walker. anyways, he hung out with them to look cooler. It is done in todays schools as well. Just look into any highschool you will see the cool kids with one nerd to boost the "cool" factor (and to do their homework).

Same reason why females always have the ugly friend or guys always have the slimy or the nerdy friend - when they're out together it makes them look better.
It is important to be aware of this, else you may not realize which side of that equation you are on when you are out with your buddy - Especially if THEY are aware of this basic procedure. =)
