How long has your son been on the ADHD meds? Have changed his dose? I was told that I had ADHD when I was in elementary and I am now 27years old. When I was told that I had it they just had to try different meds and doses and I had to be on the meds for a good 3 weeks or so before I was not "zombifyed" But if you don't want him on the meds anymore you could try Omega 3, fish oil, antioxidants and B -12 liquid all of those can improve mental function. Be sure to ask his Dr. first. Oh and take a look at this web site. www.healthwize.com

I recommend going to see an NLP Master Practitioner that specialises in this.

Make sure they are accredited by the Society of NLP.

Contact Paul McKenna at 0845 230 2062 and his team will be able to refer you to a specialist they keep on their preferred therapist list. I've seen these people in action and the results are remarkable, and your son could end up entirely drug free and living a much more balanced life than currently.

Most people operate in normal waking conciousness with their brainwaves in the Beta range of frequencies. The way ADHD basically works is that your son will likely be in the Alpha range of brainwave frequencies in normal waking conciousness, or moving in and out of it and Theta (which can cause the hyperactivity part, and is associated with dreaming). Alpha is normally a kind of daydreaming state, hence the attention deficit part. The drugs most commonly given for this tend to be a form of Speed, that forcibly suppress the Theta brainwaves which reduces the hyperactivity and improves concentration. The problem is that Alpha and Theta brainwave production are a normal and necessary part of the healthy functioning of the human brain. That's a slightly simplistic view, but you get the basic idea.

Many people with ADHD are over time, naturally able to control their symptoms without the use of medication. What a skilled NLP Master Practitioner can do is help train your son to be able to naturally control his state of mind, & suppress Theta and Alpha brainwaves, and produce more Beta brainwaves as required - something most people can do naturally with greater ease than those who have ADHD. It won't be easy or quick, but it certainly can help a great deal. The NLP Master Practitioner will also be able to teach you how to help your son do this, and be able to understand and communicate with him better when he's unable to.

As a Health Kinesiologist and as a person who has been mildly ADD myself and with an ADHD son, I have seen tremendous improvements in my ADD/ADHD clients with Health Kinesiology sessions. Based on acupressure, HK generally eliminates the stress response they have while focusing, making focusing much much easier. It has cleared up brain fog and the state of being too easily distracted. The HK work is very gentle and is totally customized to your son, whose situation and needs are different from anyone else's with ADHD. Sometimes it takes a while, like 5-15 visits, but my clients say it's worth every penny. Sometimes you can make a big difference in just a couple of visits; it varies with the client. Practitioners typically charge $75/session. You can search here for a practitioner near you:

I recommend at least calling and asking questions. Good luck!

There are a lot of things you can do. I have seen a combination of lifestyle changes and herbal remedies work well. Remove all sugar from his diet - he won't like this but you will probably see a difference quickly. Also avoid foods that have a lot of dye in them. Avoid video games and any quick moving, flashing objects. This type of mental stimulation desensitizes the brain to everyday mental stimulation which is at a much slower pace.

I have seen the following herbs work well and they are safe: Gotu Kola (not a stimulant), Milky Oat Tops, Scullcap, and Passionflower. These all feed and nourish the nervous system as well as provide nutrients.

Diet is the way to go.
The ONE thing that will almost certainly calm him down and probably work within days are essential fatty acids, principally omega 3.
Go to Higher Nature and look for EFAs.
3 or 4 grams a day will work. Personally when I'm training I take 6.
Good luck.

Diet is the one of the main things you can modify to make a possitive change. Avoiding the obvious things that contain e numbers, additives and preservatives. Increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegeatables and oily fish.
Consult your dotor about this as they should have more information on this and would be able to give you specialist advice. If you express your concerns about the dosage of the drug your son is being given, it is his duty to make a change to it until you are happy with it. Don't take him off the medication with out the doctors advice as the dose may need to be reduced over a period of time before he comes off it.
Excercise is important and to make sure that all that extra energy is being burnt off.
For support for the both of you, and information about ADHD www.adders.org has loads of information on it and can give you information on support groups.
I hope this information helps you x x

As ADHD is to do with low production of certain brain chemicals, you may find reflexology helps, particularly the adrenal gland areas. I know of this treatment being successful in a unit which deals with ADHD kids.
Thing is, it might be worth your son learning how to self treat. Hand reflexology takes about 10 minutes to do and he could just do the areas related to hormones when he feels himself getting hyper..
Geranium essential oil is supposed to help adrenal insufficiency, but whether your son would like the smell is another matter.

I grew up with ADD, and it's mostly a matter of adjusting the dosage of medication.

The best method I found for this was to get a boring book (I used rise and fall of the roman empire) and read to the bottom of the page, while counting in my mind. If I could keep counting by the time I got to the bottom of the page, then I was able to focus 'normally' without being too doped up.

How old is your son?
You can watch his diet for additives and preservatives.
Also using the incredible 5-point scale by Kari Dunn Buron and Mitzi Curtis. It is for assisting people on autism spectrum but some of the things can be related to ADHD.
Routine is very important. Also if there is a change of routine if possible for warning them saves lots of problems. Visual aids can be a blessing, they can remind them of what they are meant to be doing and when. Our son's school has one for him. They often need to be organised for what ever they need to be doing.

Dr Phil had a great guy on a long time ago. His name was Dr. Frank Lawlis. He wrote a book called the ADD Answer. Something like that. I don't have my copy here. It is a very easy to read book. He does not believe that kids should automatically be put on meds. So he helps with schedules and advising what foods your kids should not eat. Try it. I think it is 16 dollars or so at B&N and like I said very easy to read
