My fiance and I live in a one bedroom apartment in CT. Before the summer, my electric bill was around $50. In June we added one energy-saver airconditioner in the living room/kitchen, and the bill I just recieved today is for almost $150! We keep the lights off most of the day. We have a computer and a tv, but usually turn them off when we aren't using them. It seems to me like this bill is WAY to expensive. I looked at the bill and it says that this month we used 838kWh. I don't really know what that means, but it seems like a lot. Am I being charged to much?

It does SEEM expensive. Check to see how many KwH's were used before the dramatic increase. Also check to see if the price per KwH has gone up. I have a window unit air conditioner. In the winter my electric bill can be $20 and in the summer as high as $75. I live in an apartment that's pretty sheltered from the elements. But it's not the price so much as the fact that it goes up 2 to 2.5X's in the summer vs. the winter. And that's about how much yours has gone up (2 to 2.5X's). Try going as long as you can without turning it on. I hear it's REALLY hot for y'all on the east coast, so that might be hard to do until the heat wave breaks. In my area of TX it's dry and gets down to the low 70's at night, so the cool air usually lasts all day even though I only run it when I'm sleeping. This has also lowered my electric bill to around $40/mo in the summer. Now it's only twice as much as in the winter. Oh, and I have a one BR apartment. It really depends on how big your place is.

how many btu's ac it?15000?, in MA my bill only jumped 50 bucks a month for a 5000 btu ac running most of the time. Pull down your shades and keep the thing on like 72 degrees not 68, and try not to leave many doors open that don't need cooling, like closets. shut down the computer when you go to work also. Other than that all I can tell you is that the rates have gone up some and we just neeed to conserve as much as possible insteads of paying it.

No. Air Conditioners use lots of electricity, around $100-200 worth of energy. I makes your electric bill soar. Mine's usually $40 in the winter, $200 in the summer.

No, Mine went from 47.00 to 107.53.. It's the A/C. Summer is a killer for electric bills. Just a few more months and mine will be back to normal! (You could go on a "budget" plan with ComEd, they will only allow you to use so much within your price range.)

Sounds like a lot to me.. I have a 2 story house and even when i run my central air 24/7 it only went up $50.00 for one month. Something is not right.

Yea, you can thank your wonderful president for that. That's what happened with my electric bill too and you'll just have to get used to it. Good luck!

You can always request an audit from the power company if you think you have unfairly billed.
