Great Black Wasp -- Sphex pennsylvanicus

in the Spider Garden at the Farm. This wasp was *huge*.
I hate to exaggerate, but it was immense -- maybe a total body length of around 6 cm or thereabouts. It was so large that I could see it from some distance rustling around through the foliage of some asters. I thought I was seeing a group of 2 or 3 bumblebees. I'm never usually nervous photographing wasps or bees, but this insect was so large and also very watchful and would raise its wings whenever I got my camera in too close, so I felt somewhat intimidated. Also, I had to shoot a lot of photos to get anything much good as it never stopped moving around for even a few seconds. Very fascinating insect.
