I've been told Jewelry is good, but I haven't had any really good suggestions on specific jewelry. Also I'd be interested in items different than jewelry, since I feel that jewelry may be sort of a common gift, and I'd like to be a little different, or create more of a surprise.

How about a gift certificate for a manicure, pedicure or massage, since she might feel run down at first getting used to the baby.

If you want to give a present for the baby, consider getting clothes at least 12 mo old size. Or get a gift card. When I had my son, gift cards were such a godsend for all the things I needed, but didn't register for.

But it might be really nice to get the mom a present. Someone gave me a beautiful shawl after my son was born. It was so nice because I didn't have to worry about whether it fit or not, and a shawl adds a nice touch to any outfit, which is great when you're still trying to get the baby weight off. If you get one that's washable, it can also double as a cover for discreet nursing.

Another gift I really appreciated was a baby sling. There are tons all over the Internet. My favorite was the Maya Wrap. (I'm not connected to the maker in any way.) You can carry the baby easily, but still have free hands. It's also great for discreet nursing in public. And they come in lovely patterns and colors, which is a nice pick-me-up for a new mom.

Finally, offering to babysit for an evening so the mama can go out with her husband or have an evening to herself.

Give her something useful. Pay for a cleaning service to clean her house. A personal present could be a basket of personal care items, like bubble bath, candles, lotions, and chocolates. About a gift certificate for a restaurant and you volunteer to watch the baby while she and her husband have a night out. If you want to do jewelry, start a charm bracelet for her with the first charm being the baby's name, or date of birth. James Avery has excellent charms for just such an occasion.

Since she probably already has tons of baby items, I'd buy something for her specifically. Once the baby is born, people will forget she exists and focus mainly on the baby. Something to make her relaxed...maybe a gift certificate to a spa to have her hair done, or get a manicure and pedicure.

What about a decoration for the baby's room?

Or a scrapbook personalized with the baby's name and birthdate?

Jewelry is always nice, but don't get anything long or dangly, cause sooner or later those little baby fingers will grab onto it.

For specific jewelry how about a charm bracelet? Get a charm with her childs name and birthstone. Get a charm with her husbands name. And get a charm with their wedding date on it. This works great, beacause if she has more children, you can get her the charm for that baby.

I think a spa gift would be nice. I know when I brought my baby home about six weeks ago, my first adventure out, was to get my hair done. Its a nice way to have the new mom treat herself and get a break for a little bit.

Heck yeh jewelery is good. A simple bracelet or engraved anklet with the babys name will do. Its not extremely expensive either.

I am a mom of two, and my favorite gift I got was one of those collage picture frames (a big frame with room for lots of pictures). She can use it for the baby or for family pictures or whatever.

A trip to the hair salon is a great pick-me-upper that a lot of new mother's can't afford on their own, or don't think about it.
