My son is 4 months old he will put a little bit of weight on his legs when you hold him up but not much.I was just wondering if anyone had a baby who did this. The Ped seemed conserned that he wasn't putting that much weight on his legs. She he might have to go physical therapy.

I'm dealing with this today, and I wish I had the answer. We just got back from the doctor for a 9-month checkup, and have an appointment to be evaluated by a physical therapist. My baby doesn't seem to like to put weight on her legs and will only do it for a short time. When she is in her excersaucer, she doesn't like to put her feet down flat. She stands on tiptoes. But she is on track with everything else. The impression I got is that it's important to keep an eye on and check it out early so if there is a problem (perhaps poor leg muscle development) they can work to correct it at an early age. My friend who is a physical therapist suggested that my daughter may have sensory issues--she doesn't like certain textures on her feet. For example, She's more likely to bear weight on hard wood floors than carpet. We are going next week to the PT, and we'll see what they say.

I think everyone wants to worry. I have had *so* many mothers ask me if it's true that they should *never* let a baby put any weight on her/his legs before they're old enough to walk. A friend of mine was actually told (yes, by a doctor!!) to *push her baby over* if she stood up because she was "too young". You just can't win--if they do it, it's dangerous, and if they don't, they may never develop properly.

I would say don't worry about it. Get a second opinion.

He should be bearing weight by now, but I wouldn't be too worried yet. If by 6 months he isn't then a referral to an Early Start program would be appropriate.
