spam. It is people sending out junk email and your email provider catches it and puts it in your junk / bulk mail folder. Most of it is from people sending scam offers or viruses.

Its basically mass-e-mails that you may have picked up while browsing the internet, or maybe not. But its fully manageable, go to mail home ( where you see if you have e-mail) and check out the options tab ( upper right) the very first thing you see is SPAM PROTECTION, I would encourage you to edit your settingds to your individual preferences. Also each e-mail at the very bottom has a way to request that you not receive e-amail for the co. sending mail. For any e-mail spam abuse you may want to contact the FTC if it gets that annoying. Here is the link. I hope this helps, have a nice day!

A lot of it is automatically generated by those who send it.

They appear to be from many sources, but most of the email addresses you are seeing are fake and possibly coming from the same source.

Experience will tell you to setup an email account that you rarely check to use online in public view. Reserve your main email account for sites you trust, such as online banking or paying a bill, and for friends & family.

Once you submit a registration using your email address, many sites make the lists public or sell them off, which is why you should be cautious. Definitely don't use your work email address for anything outside of business. Even if you don't register anywhere, sometimes the emails you forward to friends can wind up in a spammer's hands as it gets passed around, which is another way they collect addresses.

People tend to get spam for various reasons. Some spammers simply send out e-mail to random addresses in hopes that it will reach real people. Many, though, harvest addresses from web pages or other mailing lists and sell/rent these lists out to others.

The best way to prevent spam may well be to keep your e-mail address private.
