because girls are the only thing in their lives that they feel they have a sense of control over. most everything else they feel is out of their control and need to dominate you, give it some time and they will mature and things will be better

It is a macho thing...this is what many guys thing impresses the girls. It is kinda like when two caribou ram their antlers together; the winner gets the right to mate. Young males tend to think the same way, and are just responding to their overload of testosterone, but just don't know it--especially since so many boys do it, it seems normal & is socially acceptible behavior.

Its a pride issue, though it would be fun to have a girl present some competition in a sport, but anyway, it is a major issue of pride and a male superiority complex, I believe it is good to have an independant woman, a lot guys have a self absorbed issue that a woman should be inferior to man, but in actuality women are men's partners, therefore, they are equal. In a lot of cases though, it is sometimes intimidating to have a woman who can exert herself, but if you are that woman keep doin what you do.

Guys can be very insecure, yet they show it in a different way than we do. In a way, they also want to feel superior in a relationship. And there are only few areas in life wherein a guy can be superior to a girl (not the same goes for everybody...), so he might as well take advantage of it.

Men usually are raised to be competitive in nature, my parents personally pressured me into competitive sports as a child.
Also, trying to "keep you in check" is most likely a byproduct of Ego and can be possibly be a sign of low self confidence or security of self image.
