In answer to Nettiel - Can Israel win by accomplishing its aim which is to eliminate Hizbollah. I don't think it will. I guess the Israeli got quite a shock at the fierceness of Hizbollah's response. I guess also to defeat Hizbollah, Israel would have to take on its main sponsor, Iran. And I don't see that happening. And that's all a real pity because I believe Israel has a right to the land it occupies and has a right to exist and that israel still maintains (just) a moral superiority over most of its Arabic neighbours.

to make a long answer short NO
to make it long again.
What they are doing now is a demonstration of their strength to respond to the hostile attitudes of some countries in the area such as Iran. They know fully well that they could not do a full scale invasion of Lebannon like they did in the eighties without expecting severe action against them both from the UN and other neighbours such as Syria Iran etc. I expect for them to flex their muscles a few times more and then accept a UN ruling that allows a peace force to enter the area and get things rolling again. It is only a damn shame that a few 100 people had to die in a totally avoidable crisis.

Probably because they have to win or be destroyed and have historically ignored world opinion over their actions as long as they have the support of the US and to a lesser extent the UK and I fail to see how we can complain about their actions when ours in Iraq and Afghanistan are the same

yes. if it becomes a full scale war, they'll wip lebanon in six days. but as i have said countless times, no one wins in a war! the only people who "win" are the arms dealers, politicians and those who started the war for their selfish reasons (Iran and Syria).
