I have an 11 year old and a 14 year old. Both love it. Be sure to check the rating before you make your purchase, though.

It features mutilated bodies (some on fire), a whole career track based on murdering civilians, rewards for thievery, and the ability to kill just about anyone you meet for whatever reason at all. It's all incredibly fun, but I'm not sure I'd put it in the hands of a 12-year-old.

it's very fantasy based, so it's a lot better than grand theft auto or something, and being quest-based rather than a shoot-em-up game, I'd say let them. 12 is a good age, watch while they play so you can bring things up that concern you within the game - you can discuss these things this way, whereas if they learn these games at friends' you are (teehee) oblivious!
to address the addictive aspect - ya, you won't see him for weeks, but he'll bore eventually, go on to the next, we all do! good luck!

It is a fun game but very addicting! If you don't want him to be playing for good long hours at a time then don't get it. Beware how addictive it is.
