Because he bought his people free healthcare. He brought the poor better living standards and more money - despite US sanctions and he's left-wing!
All on America's doorstep! Free healthcare for the poor! Can you even imagine how embarrassing that must be for the richest country in the world?

American propaganda. Castro took aid from the US during the revolution. But after it was over he told the US to buzz off, thank you, but the Cubans would take it from here. Sure, there were some problems in the beginning, just as there are in all nations when the government changes. But all in all Castro has been OK for Cuba. People may not have all the freedoms as the US, but that is true of many, many countries. The leader before Castro (Batista) wasn't so great either.

Primarily because the children of all those wealthy aristocrats that supported the brutal dictator, Batista, are alive and well in Southern Florida and represent a huge special interest to lobby politicians for continuing the persecution of the Cuban people. These Cuban-Americans would like nothing better to reinstate a regime just as bad or worse than Batista so that they could return to Cuba and grow wealthy and fat just like their grandparents did on the enslavement and misery of so many Cuban workers.

Several reasons:
1) He is a communist.
2) He overthrew Batista who was a corrupt leader.
3) By overthrowing Batista he was able to force American gangsters as well as American big business from ripping Cuba off.
4) He repelled the "Bay of Pigs" invasion, mounted if not by the USA but almost certainly financed by them.
5) He refuses to allow USA Big or indeed any size business to have any dealings in Cuba.
6) The USA seems unable to corrupt him.
He actually cares for his homeland.

While I'm sure some people have their other opinions, the most common seem to be around freedom of speech and human rights violations. For example:
"Professor Marifeli Pérez Stable, a Cuban American who once supported the revolution, reflects on the costs of the Cuban revolution. "[There were] thousands of executions, forty, fifty thousand political prisoners. The treatment of political prisoners, with what we today know about human rights and the international norms governing human rights ... it is legitimate to raise questions about possible crimes against humanity in Cuba."
Many who have fled to the US say similar issues continue.
