Yea $30 is enough(depending where you live..) try walmart for the tank and all

get a little small betta bowl or betta keeper..or like a 1-5 gallon tank...10 gallon if you really want...(ive seen 10 gal tanks for like 10 bucks..if you do go with a 10 gal you need a small filter..which will run about $10-15 bucks)(the betta keepers/bowls run from 5-8 bucks @ petsmart/petco..no filter needed
)
betta food (bloodworms frozen or dried..hes only fed every couple days..thats about 2-3 bucks)

The betta himself (crowntails are the prettiest they run about 8 bucks)

water conditioner if you plan to use tap water..best is NOV-aqua +(thats about 3-8 bucks depending on size of the bottle..you dont need much...so smaller bottles work fine..) if you dont use tap use reverse osmosis water..usually local fish stores sell it for like 25cents a gallon..no need for water treatments.

Really all you need is this

1 betta $3-5
1 bowl of at least 2 gallons* $10
1 Betta food $5
1 jar to age your water $0

Note that if possible instead of the bowl you should consider a 2-5 gallon tank with a builtin filter. This might run you 20-30 dollars. Note you don't need dechlorination drops. Leaving the water new water out 48 in an open jar will get rid of chlorine.

PS- Please read up on betta care on betta talk.

You can buy a 10 gallon aquarium for less than $10. This is a perfect size for a betta (pronounced: bet-tah, not bay-tah).
A small filter will be about $10 also. A can of Betta Flakes is $2. Now you have $8 left for the fish. A nice betta will run you anywhere from $3 to $6 at the local fish store (lfs). Make sure you ask the fish person to help you select a healthy one. No torn fins, no cloudy eyes, no cottony growths, no filthy dirty cups that they live in. Any of these, try somewhere else. If he seems uninterested or doesn't know anything, ask to see the manager. Most mgrs. know the fish department well.

Aren't the male Betas beautiful! I had seen a new type at WalMart just the other day.. a more fancier Beta..
I think that one may have run $7.00 or $8.00, and the food seems to be well under $5.00..
I have used larger goldfish bowls for a while, and actually prefer them to smaller tanks. Change the water frequently.. add a few cute things and there you go.
I'm getting myself a Beta on Monday. Maybe two.. (two different bowls).. I like the dark blues and burgundies..
Have you seen the silvery whites, that have a touch of color streaking them????!

Live in the city? Use a water conditioner as well..

you dont need a big tank or anything, you can only have 1 beta at a time, because they kill each other. go to walmart and get a cheap little fishbowl, like, probly between 5-10 bucks. get the fish, i think theyre like 5 or 6 bucks, *not sure*, and whatever you have left, get beta food, and like a rock bedding or pebbles or soemthing. thats all ya need.

YOU WILL NEED A SMALL CONTAINER OR BETTA BOWL APPROX $10.00, A BETTA NO MORE THAT $5.00, WATER CONDITIONER $5.00 AND OF COURSE FOOD NO MORE THAT $3.00. SO YOU ARE CUTTING IT CLOSE BUT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO COPE WITH ONLY $30.00. YOU CAN DO A NICE BOWL AND EVERYTHING. BUT THERE ARE SOME BETTA BOWLS THAT ARE LIKE $30.00.
