Quickbooks is a good software for small businesses, we have a floral business and we do our payroll, financial statements, invoice, etc. with it.

"use long term that doesn't have to be updated" ALL payroll software has to be updated. Every year the rates and forms change, so the software has to be updated. Even payroll services (Paychex, ADP, etc) have to update their programs regularly. For the hassle, the annual cost is well worth it. What accounting software do you use? If you use either Peachtree (my preference) or Quickbooks, it is easier to just purchase the annual sevice. As a bookkeeper, I can assure you your time is worth more doing billable work than messing around with payroll tables and programming.

Aye, I have to agree with everyone else. Quickbooks is the defacto standard for small business accounting these days, and most accountancies accept QB's database too.
Good Luck

Quickbooks is the way to go. If you plan on using an accountant for taxes, it's easiest to be on the same software.
