The song count for my itunes library says I have 384 songs and 1.38 gb in the library, & I had my ipod update setting programmed to automatically update songs as soon as I plug it in, but it won't put more than 79 songs on my ipod. when I click on 'my ipod' under the source menu, the song count says 79 songs and 303.4 mb, but the Used vs. free bar says I've used 1.73 gb. I know photos aren't a factor because I didn't upload any. I would just take back the ipod & disc and exchange for a new one, but the reciept is long lost. Please help me!

i think you get those 99 songs FREE and then after that, you have to start paying for the songs.

You've used 1.73GB but your iPod can only hold 2GB. So you only have about 270MB left, which is a little more than 60 songs.

The 500 song capacity is only an estimate based on an average song length of four minutes per song and a sound quality of 128kbps.

If your songs are longer and/or sound quality is higher, the song files will take more space. That's probably what is happening in your case.

Are the songs in mp3 for still. If so you need to convert them to AAC and if you click the help tab you can search on how to do that. You still probably won't get exactly 500. I'm sure they estimate that with shorter songs than what the average person listens to.

Maybe your songs are longer than they expect from the average song, you might have a song which is an album, and it could depend on how much bitrate it is, the higher the bitrate (quality) the less space you will have... If all else falses, take it back, get your money back and get something new! or... just put it on ebay or something like that!

The song that you have chosen are most likey long songs (more than 5min's long) When they say it could hold up to (say for example 500 songs) they mean 500 3min songs. I had the same problem with mine. Most of my songs were like 8min's long so it only held a fraction of the amount they said it would.

Check the file type. Sounds like you've downloaded analog. Those files are huge. Make sure you are using digital format songs.

I must have been a broken one. Did you feel anything strange? If you felt sort of like a shock or something, it must be broken. I guess if you lost your recipt, you're better off throwing it away.
